Divalproex sodium extended-release (ER) is an anticonvulsant and mood-stabilizing medicine used to control certain seizure disorders. It is also used in the management of manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder and for the prevention of migraine headaches. The ER formulation is designed for extended release of the medicine over time.

Indications :

  • Epilepsy / seizure disorders – Management of certain types of seizures.
  • Bipolar disorder – Treatment of acute manic or mixed episodes.
  • Migraine prophylaxis – Prevention of migraine attacks.
  • Adjunctive therapy in epilepsy – May be used with other antiepileptic medicines when prescribed.


Side Effects :

  • Nausea, vomiting or stomach discomfort
  • Dizziness or drowsiness
  • Headache
  • Tremor
  • Increased appetite or weight gain
  • Hair loss
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal discomfort

Serious effects requiring medical attention: severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, unusual bruising/bleeding, yellowing of the skin or eyes, severe weakness, or unusual changes in mental status.

Storage :

  • Store at room temperature, generally below 25°C.
  • Keep in a dry place, away from moisture and direct sunlight.
  • Keep the medicine in its original packaging.
  • Keep out of reach and sight of children.
  • Do not use after the expiry date.


Precautions :

  • Use strictly as prescribed; do not stop suddenly, as this may trigger seizures.
  • Inform the doctor about liver disease, pancreatitis, bleeding disorders, or low platelet counts.
  • Valproate can cause serious liver and pancreatic toxicity; seek medical attention for concerning symptoms.
  • Pregnancy: Valproate carries significant risks to the fetus and should generally be avoided for migraine prevention during pregnancy; women who could become pregnant should discuss effective contraception and pregnancy planning with their doctor.
  • Inform your doctor about all other medicines because of potential drug interactions.
  • Avoid or limit alcohol because it may increase dizziness and drowsiness.
  • ER tablets should generally be swallowed whole and not crushed or chewed.
