Permethrin 5% w/w is a topical antiparasitic medicine primarily used to treat scabies, a skin infestation caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite. It kills the mites and helps eliminate the infestation. It may also help reduce the spread of scabies when used correctly and when close contacts are treated as advised.
Indications :
- Scabies (Sarcoptes scabiei infestation)
- Treatment of itching and skin irritation associated with scabies
- Treatment of scabies in adults and children when appropriate
- Treatment should generally include simultaneous management of close household/sexual contacts as advised by a healthcare professional
Side Effects :
- Mild burning or stinging
- Itching
- Redness or skin irritation
- Tingling or numbness
- Dryness or rash
- Temporary worsening of itching after treatment
Seek medical advice if severe skin irritation, swelling, breathing difficulty, or a significant allergic reaction occurs.
Precautions :
- For external use only; do not swallow.
- Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth, nose and other mucous membranes.
- Do not apply to severely damaged or infected skin unless advised by a doctor.
- Wash hands after application unless the hands are part of the treatment area.
- Follow the prescribed application instructions and contact time carefully.
- Itching may continue for several weeks after successful treatment and does not necessarily mean treatment has failed.
- Wash clothing, towels and bedding used recently according to medical advice to reduce reinfestation.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should use it after consulting a healthcare professional.
