Flupirtine Maleate – Centrally Acting Non-Opioid Analgesic for Musculoskeletal Pain.
Flupirtine Maleate is a centrally acting, non-opioid analgesic primarily used for the management of acute and chronic pain, especially of musculoskeletal origin. It works by selectively opening neuronal potassium channels (SNEPCO mechanism) and indirectly modulating NMDA receptor activity, which helps reduce neuronal excitability and pain transmission. In addition to its analgesic effect, it also exhibits muscle relaxant properties, making it particularly useful in conditions associated with muscle stiffness and spasms. Unlike traditional NSAIDs, it does not significantly affect prostaglandin synthesis, thereby reducing the risk of gastric irritation. However, due to its association with hepatotoxicity, its use is generally recommended for short durations under strict medical supervision.
